Breast Reduction Q & A

What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction is surgery to remove extra skin, fat, and glandular tissue in and around your breasts to create smaller, lighter breasts that are more proportionate to your body.

When should I consider breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery is all about your physical, mental, and social comfort. If you face any of the following challenges, you might be a good candidate for breast reduction.

  • Back or neck pain due to breast heaviness
  • Bra straps cause shoulder grooves
  • Difficulty finding clothes that accommodate your breasts
  • Frequent skin irritation or rashes under your breasts
  • Embarrassment over your breast size
  • Poor self-confidence due to your breast size
  • Difficulty being as physically active as you’d like due to large breasts

Breast reduction surgery is a highly personal decision. Dr. Madni takes the time to discuss your reasons for wanting the surgery and explains realistic expectations before the procedure to make sure it’s right for you.

Should I have a breast reduction or a breast lift?

While breast reduction mainly focuses on eliminating extra tissue, the surgery typically includes elevating the remaining breast tissue to a position that’s right for your body.

A breast lift won’t remove a significant amount of breast tissue, but it does raise your breasts to their original or more aesthetically pleasing position.

So, the main thing to consider is whether your breasts are larger and heavier than you feel comfortable with. If so, a breast reduction is likely the better choice since it generally includes a lift.

What is the breast reduction surgery process?

While you’re under anesthesia, Dr. Madni makes an anchor-shaped incision that allows him to remove tissue and elevate your nipples while they’re attached to their blood and nerve supply.

With even larger breasts, Dr. Madni may need to detach the nipples and areolas, then surgically reposition them higher on your chest cavity, a procedure known as a free nipple graft.

Because breast reduction involves complex breast reshaping, Dr. Madni layers stitches throughout the tissue to help it stay in position as it heals.
